Daylight and bougainvillea - by Airotciv

This is one of the most beautiful poems ever written – it is a prayer of gratitude for the most fundamental things in life!

LITANY

By George Campbell

I hold the splendid daylight in my hands

Inwardly grateful for a lovely day.

Thank you life.

Daylight like a fine fan spread from my hands

Daylight like scarlet poinsettia

Daylight like yellow cassia flowers

Daylight like clean water

Daylight like green cacti

Daylight like sea sparkling with white horses

Daylight like sunstrained blue sky

Daylight like tropic hills

Daylight like a sacrament in my hands.

Amen.

    Such a beautiful poem.

  2. This is one of the most beautiful poems I have ever read. It reminds of the many simple things I often forget that I should be grateful for.

I agree Donett. It really lifts me up. Sometimes I say it to myself when I am doing Sun Salutations in yoga – it goes perfectly with it

  4. Eloise Rust says:

The first two lines were revealed to my spirit after a difficult day, so I went a searching. Think about this, I learnt this poem in Elementary School, in Jamaica a long time ago and had forgotten about it. As the evening wore on I was able to share Litany with another friend as a means of encouragement. Splendid! Inspiring! Refreshing!

Thanks Eloise. The first 2 lines are SO powerfu! I actually say them to the first part of my Sun Salutation. It is majestic, as I sweep the sun up and around me and then bow with gratitude. Thanks so much for sharing. Bless you

I remember the entire grade 6B reciting this poem every morning at Charlton Primary School in Alexandria, St. Ann in Jamaica in the seventies. Can anyone say whether or not this tradition still continues? I think Miss Palmer started it.

  12. Marguerite Orane says:

Thank you for that sweet memory. The poem is so beautiful – every child should learn it and learn to live each day from this perspective!

    Blessings in abundance
