Who am I? Who are you?

While completing an application for membership at Costco, the young attendant asked me what my occupation was. I responded that I was a professor at Ryerson who taught business management. He blurted out “But you don’t LOOK like a business professor”. I laughingly asked him what a business professor looked like. “An old, gray man” was his response.

This post is dedicated to anyone who can’t quite figure out who I am.

I am not black
I am a human whose skin colour is called “black”

I am not Jamaican
I am a human who was born on the island of Jamaica

I am not a Harvard MBA
I am a human who earned an MBA from Harvard

I am not a business strategist
I am a human who advises businesses on strategy

I am not an author
I am a human who writes books and blogs

I am not a runner
I am a human who loves to run

I am not a vegetarian
I am a human who does not eat meat

I am not a woman
I am a human of the female gender

Who AM I?

I am a coalescence of energy that today happens to be all those things
And tomorrow ….. could be, might be, will be .. something else

Who are YOU?

This perspective is so comprehensive Marguerite.
Thanks for sharing. An excellent way to start our year, I believe. I think that this fundamental believe of “knowing thyself” and our role in the “space” in which we operate helps us to form a realistic vision of where we are. Our expectations of ourselves and others also become more realistic and anxiety, stress and poor judgement increasingly shy away from our lives; they simply have no food. As usual, thank you for sharing in your special way.

  2. Great post Marguerite. It hit me so directly that I was compelled to revise the title of my blog. Thanks.

Thanks Chris. I always do a double-take when people ask “What do you do”? We are so many things, and yet we just are …. ONE

Nice…nice…first time on your site Marguerite and yes I like it better than the other one that directed me here. Isn’t it interesting all the labels that people like to slap on your forehead or chest. I guess if we really didn’t have labels we would end up with peas instead of corn. This past Christmas I changed my speak or response when anybody felt the need to categorize. Now my answer is “it’s just one of my many, many talents.” The human experience…it really does allow you to explore.

Welcome to “free and laughing” community Suzette – so happy to have you! Yes, you are right – these labels just box us in – and then we wonder why our lives are limited. Well …. check how we label ourselves.

I love this post. It quietly whispers: Label-free Life, and that resonates with me so much! Thank you for sharing your Light!

Thank you Akilah. Labels help identify, but they also box us in. Even our name is a label … so good to be aware that we are more than labels
    Have a blessed day!
