Winter: Spring WILL win

Over the past few weeks, I have watched the vagaries of the weather in Toronto – rain one moment, then snow, then wet snow; temperatures above O°C then biting cold and windy; sunny in the morning, overcast in the afternoon …. and so on.  One just doesn’t know what to expect from one moment to the next.  Trying to figure out what to wear presents quite a conundrum – winter coat or spring jacket?  How many layers?  Three pairs of socks or two? Snow boots?  Rain boots?  Sexy sandals?  Light mitts or snow gloves?  And this pondering extends even to my doggies – can they go walky-walky naked or do they still need to wear their sweaters?  Or should it be their water-resistant jackets?  So many decisions, born of uncertainty as to what Mother Nature will present in the next moment.

I go with this uneven and unsteady flow with one thought foremost in my mind: no matter the weather – “Spring”!  I bemusedly wonder as March 21 approaches “Doesn’t winter realize that it CANNOT win”?  Surely winter knows that spring WILL prevail.  So why does it not just give up gracefully and allow spring to flow in all its beautiful glory?  Oh that would be too easy.  Perhaps spring is even part of the conspiracy – after all, the longer winter stays, the more we appreciate spring!

And so, as I gaze from the bay window of my home, I muse – how like winter and spring we humans are. How many times have we been in situations where we know we cannot win, yet we fight to the futile, bitter end? With each snowfall, each sub-freezing day, winter displays its awesome power – over our environment, our physical comfort, our activities, our emotions.  Are we like winter, hanging around, delighting in our power simply to make others uncomfortable?  What’s the use though, if we know the inevitable outcome?  What point are we trying to make?  And how many times are we like spring – aching to break loose and display our glory, yet conspiring with who or what we know is not good for us and is blocking our good?

Winter – spring WILL prevail.  And I say to myself: “Marguerite, take heed when you behave like winter in its final throes.  Let go and allow the glory of you as spring to burst forth”

I’m laughing as I read this Marguerite because, like you, I’m waiting for and looking forward to spring. However, I do appreciate your analogy to letting go. Thanks

Hahaha…Ahhh yes Marguerite, good old Toronto weather or as “they” say two seasons “winter and construction”. Having e-mails from 2009 (don’t ask why)I re-read one from a friend that mentioned “weather is wacky, last week I was out mowing the lawn this week I am back to shoveling snow”in March. He and I spoke and we laughed about the year when I visited in May and it started flurrying and I got right back on the plane heading back home to the tropics. Letting go is always good for a lot of things… Spring WILL come, Summer WILL always pass too quickly, Autumn WILL be here “already” and Winter always knows it WILL be back before you know it. Enjoy the crocuses and tulips that pop their colorful heads above the white canvas of snow they signal Spring is on it’s way!!!

    Donna,

I am SO happy that this post finds resonance with you. Yes, open to spring – leave winter behind literally and figuratively. You are getting a powerful message from the universe. Follow love. I wish you all the very best!

    Love and blessings

    Marguerite
