“It’s been a wild ride this past month, so I decided to do an Oprah, just let it out and put it out there”. So said my friend Ingrid Riley, as she launched into a summary of her month of March. I won’t share her Crappy Stuff and her Good Stuff, but I WILL share what she learned. For it’s the learning that brings her out on top, and could perhaps make March 2010 her best month ever! As I read her lessons, I found that so many of them (all?) related to me personally. Do you see yourself? This is not surprising, for we are all linked, all one, and the good of one is the good of all.
By the way, Ingrid is an amazing tech guru, and has been so wonderful and giving in helping me navigate the world of Social Media and blogging. After you have read her lessons, check out two of her sites:
Have fun reading and reflecting!
Lessons Learnt, things I was reminded of
- I learnt that I can still do my work and well through hours of tears and on even less hours of sleep.
- I was reminded that every time you get knocked down, u just gotta get up and keep going after you scream, cry, cuss or phone a friend. But just get up and keep going. I come from a family of very strong women, so I have no business being a wimp.
- I was reminded of the need to ask for help as trying to be a martyr is so 17th century.
- I was reminded of how amazing a bunch of friends I have and how wonderful strangers can be and that help comes from the most unexpected places many times.
- I was reminded that I can be screaming on the inside while smiling on the outside when needs be, especially when you’re tired, police just stopped you for the second time in 2 days and while you’d rather cuss pure claat (NB: for my non-Jamaican fans, this is a Jamaican expletive) when they say I am clearly coming from a wild weekend in Negril when I went there to deliver another workshop.
- I was reminded that exercise is the best drug ever. Red wine is cool too, but endorphins are a girl’s best friend. But when you are so tapped out and simply nuh go nuh weh, KFC BBQ wings and two scoops of Haagen Dazs are great pick me ups too. You can hit the gym later
- Never be too busy to call or listen to a friend, help a colleague, say good morning when you enter an office, to call or send a text with I love you, I miss you or how are you. If you forget this, check yourself. Why be lonely at the top when success is always sweeter when shared
- I’ve learnt that some people will still mistake your sweetness for weakness
- I learnt to seize every moment, every opportunity especially when you think you are too tired to possibly do anymore. Push yourself, Surprise yourself. You can always do more, or just do different. The next level winnings are wicked sweet
- I was reminded that it’s always best to be real, candid with clients especially when you are late with their work. They appreciate the truth over bullshit any day even if it means their stuff is going to be 2 weeks late
- If someone wants to leave you, let them. Accept that their part of the ride may just be over and you’re probably entering a phase which requires you to fly solo. Give it some time but the heart heals, opens up and will eventually love again
