Footprints of a champion

We awoke early this morning to the beauty of a blanket of white covering everything within sight.    It has been 25 years since my last snowfall, and so I was as excited and transfixed this morning as ever!  For my daughter, it was her very first sight of snow, and it was magical!  You could see it in the light in her eyes, as bright as the white of the snow itself.  So tempting to curl up and stay indoors!

But this is Canada.  Victoria has swim practice at 7.00 a.m. every Wednesday morning.  I held my silence and watched her get up and get going, determined that this snow would NOT get in her way.  So, off she went, and as I gazed at her feet lifting high with each step to get through the as yet unshoveled pathway, her head jutting forward with determination like the bow of a ship ploughing through the waves, my heart just swelled with pride.

For I knew that I was looking at a champion!  This is the stuff of which true victors are made (no coincidence that her name is VICTORIA).  Determination, commitment, adaptability – to adjust so willingly to totally different conditions, coming from Jamaica where temperatures in the 70s are “freezing” and where quite a few school days are missed due to rain.  This is her true education!  This, the learning to be a successful human being.  I am a proud mommy today, knowing that my daughter has the real skills that she needs to succeed in life.

And I am just as proud of my champion doggies, who really seem to have some Husky in them as they merrily frolicked in the snow for the first time ever!  Here are more footprints of champions!!!  I really AM free and laughing today!

I don’t know your daughter, but I do believe she’s a true champion! Congrats to you both on her newest journey. See you when I return to Canada!
