What’s keeping us from catching the squirrel?

Sniffing for squirrel

The squirrel chase resumed in dogged earnestness (pun intended) this morning.  The dogs know the spots where they are most likely to meet squirrels, so we now have a set route for the morning walk.  I follow their lead.

As I tried my best to keep up with them, being dragged at Bolt-like speed when they sighted a squirrel, it occurred to me that I had made an assumption in my post yesterday that may not be correct: “The dogs will never catch a squirrel”.  Yes, that’s true – they will never catch a squirrel, because I will not allow them to.  Their leashes are wound around my wrist and for extra security, gripped with my fingers.  I am NOT letting them go!  Sometimes I run with them which allows them a faster advance; at other times I dig in my heels and hold them back.  They tug and strain forward, and I lean and pull back.  It’s an exercise in physics.  And I have this feeling, that if they were free from me, the leash and collar, they might, just might catch a squirrel!

So I muse some more – perhaps you CAN catch your squirrel.  Question is – what’s holding you back?  What is the leash, the collar and most importantly, who are the people keeping you from catching the squirrel?  But even as you answer these questions, remember the deeper question: “What will you do with the squirrel when you catch it”?

Is it the squirrel, or is it the chase??

For the doggies – it’s the chase, which is why when they don’t catch the squirrel, they just move right along. For humans, most times it’s the squirrel, which is why we get so bent out of shape when we don’t catch it!
